Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery position in a Family Birthing Center setting, requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience and a full suite of OB certifications for a 13-week night shift contract in California.
Job Details
• Acute care hospital setting within a Family Birthing Center covering L&D and Mother/Baby (MB) units,
• L&D unit has 4 beds; MB unit has 8 beds,
• Patient population includes standard term and preterm L&D, couplets, GYN patients, and newborns requiring IV antibiotics or short-term O2 - no high-risk OB; mothers at 34 weeks or below are transferred out,
• Patient ratios: L&D 1:2, 1:1 during active delivery; MB 1:4 (couplets),
• Unit averages approximately 45 deliveries per month,
• Each delivery is staffed with 2 RNs and 1 RT,
• Charge nurse is typically non-patient-carrying but provides break relief; no nurse aides on unit,
• Charting via Cerner EMR,
• 12-hour night shifts ),
• Every other weekend required; weekend nights include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
• Travelers rotate into holiday coverage with core staff,
• First to float; floating responsibility is within L&D or MB only - no cross-unit floating outside the Family Birthing Center,
• Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance with no self-scheduling; travelers can view schedules remotely and indicate availability for extra shifts or arrange trades with other staff,
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7; pharmacy hours are with on-call pharmacist overnight,
• Hospitalist/OB on-call and Anesthesia on-call available at night,
Job Requirements
• Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration - pending licenses not accepted,
• Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required,
• Required certifications (all must be active; pending not accepted): BLS (AHA), ACLS, NRP, STABLE, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM),
• Strong emergency response skills and ability to work independently with limited overnight resources,
• Driver's license required for consideration,
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked - both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire,
Additional Information
• Floor-specific orientation is 2-3 days with a preceptor; bedside report is standard practice,
• Facility-wide orientation for this CommonSpirit Sacramento region facility takes place in Sacramento, not at the local facility,
• Candidates must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) before an offer can be confirmed,
• A pass/fail sterile technique test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation,
• Scrubs are provided by the facility,
• Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's); holiday time-off requests will be considered but are not guaranteed,
• Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered,
• Local candidates are accepted for this position
