Job Description
Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse for our Labor and Delivery unit within the Healthcare & Medical Services department. In this role, you will provide comprehensive, family-centered nursing care to patients throughout all stages of labor, birth, and immediate postpartum recovery. Working in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, you will perform ongoing maternal and fetal assessments, interpret and respond to electronic fetal monitoring, administer medications and IV therapies, and collaborate closely with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to promote safe, evidence-based care.
The Registered Nurse–Labor and Delivery will be responsible for preparing patients and support persons for labor and delivery, explaining procedures, addressing questions and concerns, and providing continuous emotional support and patient education. You will assist with vaginal deliveries and operative births, including cesarean sections, and respond quickly and effectively to obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, or non-reassuring fetal status. You will also support immediate newborn stabilization and transition, skin-to-skin contact, and early initiation of breastfeeding in collaboration with lactation support.
At Mission Health, you will document assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record, follow all hospital policies and regulatory standards, and participate actively in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing maternal and neonatal outcomes. You will precept new nurses as needed, contribute to unit-based education, and engage in ongoing professional development. The environment is highly collaborative, emphasizing teamwork, mutual respect, open communication, and continuous learning to support both clinical excellence and your professional growth.
This position is ideal for a nurse who is detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and passionate about supporting patients and families through one of life’s most significant experiences. The role requires strong critical thinking, excellent communication, and the ability to prioritize and adapt quickly in a dynamic setting with changing patient needs. Mission Health offers a patient-centered workplace where your expertise will be valued and where you will have opportunities for career advancement within our comprehensive healthcare system.
