Job Description
BJC HealthCare is seeking an experienced and compassionate Assistant Nurse Manager for our Labor & Delivery unit within our Healthcare & Medical Services department. As an integral member of a mission-driven, non-profit organization headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, you will support the Labor & Delivery Nurse Manager in providing safe, high-quality, and family-centered care to birthing patients and newborns in a fast-paced, acute care environment. This role combines direct clinical practice with frontline leadership responsibilities, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes, staff engagement, and overall unit performance.
The Assistant Nurse Manager, Labor & Delivery, serves as a visible and accessible clinical leader on the unit, providing guidance, mentorship, and hands-on support to bedside nurses and the multidisciplinary team. You will help coordinate daily operations, including staffing, patient flow, bed management, and resource allocation, ensuring that patients receive timely, evidence-based care throughout labor, birth, and immediate postpartum recovery. Working closely with physicians, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatal and postpartum teams, you will foster seamless communication and collaboration to achieve optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes.
In this role, you will actively participate in patient care, performing comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, interpreting electronic fetal monitoring tracings, supporting various labor and birth modalities, responding to obstetric emergencies, and providing skilled clinical interventions as needed. You will model best practices in patient and family education, shared decision-making, and culturally competent, trauma-informed care, aligned with BJC Healthcare’s commitment to compassionate care and medical excellence.
The Assistant Nurse Manager partners with the Nurse Manager to support recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development of nursing staff. Responsibilities include assisting with staff scheduling and daily assignments, providing real-time coaching and feedback, participating in performance evaluations, and supporting staff through change and unit initiatives. You will help identify learning needs, promote evidence-based practice, and support continuing education, certifications, and competency validation for the Labor & Delivery team. Serving as a role model for professional practice, you will encourage a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Quality, safety, and regulatory readiness are central to this position. The Assistant Nurse Manager contributes to the planning and implementation of quality improvement projects related to maternal and neonatal outcomes, patient satisfaction, and workflow efficiency. You will help monitor and interpret key metrics, such as obstetric hemorrhage rates, cesarean section rates, infection rates, and patient experience scores, and will collaborate with leadership to develop action plans in alignment with organizational goals. This role also supports compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission and CMS standards, and participates in audits, chart reviews, and policy updates.
BJC Healthcare values a collaborative environment in which employees can contribute ideas, engage in shared governance, and influence practice at the bedside. As Assistant Nurse Manager, you will support unit-based councils and committees, encourage staff participation in decision-making, and help communicate organizational priorities and changes clearly and effectively. You will play a key role in fostering an environment of psychological safety, mutual respect, and open communication, where team members feel supported to speak up for safety and bring forward new ideas.
This position is primarily on-site within the Labor & Delivery unit and may require flexibility to work a combination of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on unit needs. The Assistant Nurse Manager may assume responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Nurse Manager, acting as the on-site leadership contact for clinical and operational issues. You will demonstrate strong organizational skills, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to prioritize and delegate effectively in a dynamic, high-acuity environment.
At BJC Healthcare, you will join an organization that prioritizes safety, quality of care, ethical practices, and innovation. In alignment with our mission, this role offers opportunities for professional growth through exposure to complex obstetric care, participation in system-wide initiatives, and engagement in projects that advance maternal–child health. Employees benefit from a comprehensive total rewards package that may include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement savings options such as a 401k, and access to professional development resources. By serving as an Assistant Nurse Manager in Labor & Delivery, you will directly contribute to life-changing moments for patients and families while growing your leadership and clinical expertise within a supportive, high-performing team.
