Description:
A professional nurse is accountable for the care of a group of patients.
The Registered Nurse (RN) focuses on safe, effective, patient and family-centered care, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes.
The RN is responsible for maintaining a financially stable unit and promoting personal development with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and education.
The RN supervises licensed and non-licensed staff members.
The RN is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the plan of care based on the Kristin M. Swanson Model of Care.
The RN focuses on patient and family comforts, education, and satisfaction.
The RN applies educational and professional experiences in the delivery of quality care and in mentoring/precepting staff.
Job Responsibilities:
Assessment:
Performs assessments and reassessments per policy and procedure, or as warranted by patient condition.
Demonstrates the ability to make sound independent decisions.
Development & Implementation:
Initiates, prioritizes, and implements the plan of care.
Reviews and revises the plan as indicated.
Collaborates with patient/family and interdisciplinary services.
Utilizes resources appropriately to support the needs of patients and families.
Evaluation:
Monitors and documents response to clinical interventions.
Education:
Facilitates, coordinates, provides, and evaluates education specific to patient and family needs.
Ensures education is appropriate for the care, treatment, and services provided during their stay and at discharge.
Leadership:
Delegates tasks to licensed and non-licensed personnel.
Functions as a mentor/preceptor and encourages teamwork.
Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement.
Participates in quality, safety, and service process improvement efforts.
Implements practice changes and complies with regulatory standards.
Patient Assessment:
Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care.
Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others.
Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families.
Develops relationships with families, promoting their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs.
Planning:
Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care.
Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care.
Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems.
Research:
Reads journals with studies or articles applicable to practice.
Brings ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
Participation in the development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities is expected.
Effective communication systems are to be utilized.
Cost-effective care is to be promoted.
Feedback to co-workers is encouraged.
Awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment is essential.
