Provides patient care in a mobile environment to patients being transported to/from Children's Wisconsin. Responsible for providing quality assessment, therapeutic interventions, and clinical expertise to the neonatal, pediatric, and adult population in the transport environment. In conjunction with the Transport Respiratory Therapist, acts as a resource hospital wide for patent care standards and pre-code recognition. Patient care is provided in accordance with established policies and procedures, medical protocols, and/or direct online consultation with the appropriate medical control physician within the transport environment (ambulance, helicopter, fixed wing).

  • Functions as a team leader when a physician is not present on the transport.
  • Assesses patient and provides interventions according to PALS, NRP, and ACLS protocols in an emergent situation, or after consulting with medical control physician and/or referring provider.
  • Exercises independent judgment in situations when sudden clinical changes occur. Understands and implements necessary interventions and their expected outcomes.
  • Provides a safe environment while maximizing clinical expertise during interfacility transports.
  • Collaborates with other team members in the planning and provision of optimal patient care during the transport process including patient placement.
  • Effectively communicates with team members, medical control, referring staff, patients and families throughout the transport process.
  • Contributes to the identification of a potential diagnosis, interventions, and expected outcomes specific to the defined patient population.
  • Possesses analytical and critical thinking skills in interpreting patient labs, CXR, scans, and overall patient assessment.
  • Acts as an engaged team member by identifying personal, departmental and hospital goals. Collaborates in a positive manner towards the success of the goals by offering input, ideas and solutions.

Education:
Requires a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing. An Associate degree may be considered, with the expectation they will be enrolled in a BSN completion program with degree completion required within three years.
Experience:
At least Three (3) years of critical care nursing experience in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of patient care within a defined patient population and gain knowledge and skill in pediatric nursing procedures and standards.
Pediatric experience preferred
- Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to resolve complex patient problems in a mobile environment, develop standards of care and procedures, and evaluate the quality of nursing care.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and utilize time management, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
- Demonstrates ability to assemble complex equipment and perform tasks which require fine motor skills.
- Demonstrates ability to cope with physically and mentally stressful situations.
- Basic personal computer skills preferred.
- Maintains and demonstrates the ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours to meet patient care needs.
- Must pass pre-placement physical exam and meet health requirements for flying within the physical capacity evaluation prior to hire and annually.
- Transport team must meet height requirements of not greater than 6ft 2in., not less than 4 ft 10 in.
- Transport team members must maintain a mission ready weight less than 245 pounds. Mission ready is defined as your weight including the flight suit, boots, and helmet with liner, coat with liner, and any other personal items that you carry. Requirements are subject to annual review with one year advance notice to change.
Licenses and Certifications:
- BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required
- License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin required
- PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required within 180 days.
- ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council within 180 days.
- NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Provider - American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association within 180 days.
FTE .9 Nights schedule. Night shift differentials PLUS additional Night Shift Pay Premium.
