Summary: The Accredited Surgical Technologist (AST) plays a vital role as the scrub technologist within the surgical suite, primarily supporting labor and delivery procedures. This position involves delivering patient care aligned with established outcomes and collaborating closely with the Registered Nurse to ensure smooth surgical operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere strictly to aseptic techniques during scrub and support duties.
  • Perform scrub duties in various service areas as assigned.
  • Assist in executing the patient's care plan within the scope of surgical technologist practice, following unit guidelines, policies, and legal standards.
  • Function as a surgical scrub technician under RN supervision, including assisting with gowning, gloving, and preparation of the operating room.
  • Prepare patients through skin preparation and draping, maintaining sterile technique principles.
  • Handle specimens according to policy and participate in the final surgical "Time Out" to verify patient and procedure accuracy.
  • Clean, disinfect, and properly store instruments and equipment post-procedure.
  • Participate in sponge, instrument, and needle counts alongside circulating nurses.
  • Operate sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, and instrument washers competently.
  • Support supply management by stocking, replenishing, and preparing necessary materials and specialty carts.
  • Ensure terminal cleaning of the operating room at day's end.
  • Transport and escort patients within the facility as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and foster positive relations with patients, families, and team members.
  • Support patients' cultural and spiritual practices within care plans.
  • Adjust care based on age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs.
  • Assist with charge completion and cost containment efforts.
  • Engage in educational and performance improvement activities to maintain certification.
  • Demonstrate proper body mechanics and professional conduct at all times.
  • Provide a 30-day notice upon resignation.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a Surgical Technologist Course from an accredited CAHEA program is preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience & Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.
